What is Metro Rail?

Facilities Of Metro Rail

There are lots of facilities of metro- rail rather than light-rail.A Metro-Rail runs on a grade-separated exclusive right-of-way.It has no access for pedestrians and other traffic while light rail systems may share roads or have level crossings.In contrast to commuter rail or light rail,metro systems are primarily used for transport within a city.It provides higher services.Trains are available and they have substantially higher passenger volume capacities.Moreover,they carry only passengers and do not share tracks with freight trains or inter-city rail services.

The London Underground is the earliest metro system opened as an "underground railway" in 1863.It carries more than 30,000 passengers on the opening day.Newspapers hailed this day commenting ' the great engineering triumph of the day '.Moreover,Metro-Rail becomes huge popular in the busiest cities.Countries chose this transportation and developed in their own way.For example,the metro system with the longest route length is the Shanghai Metro.The Beijing Subway is the busiest and the New York City Subway uses the most stations.

 

Metro Rail In Dhaka

Dhaka Metro Rail  construction of nine stations between Uttara and Agargaon is the country’s first metro rail. 

Dhaka is one of the most highly populated and traffic congested cities in the world with an ever-increasing population of over 14 million.The intolerable traffic all around the city have become a harsh reality for its inhabitants.The heavy traffic and pollution problems are rapidly growing due to rapid urbanisation.Currently, the transit facilities within the city are overburdened with the ever increasing demand to make a better and modern commuting system.

To deal with the transportation problems in Dhaka,Bangladesh Government has been prompted to seek expansion and modernisation of the city's mass transit mode.Bangladesh Government created the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority in 1998.Then Urban transport plan was commissioned in 2008.The commission laid out a comprehensive transport plan,Strategic Transport Plan (STP) for the Greater Dhaka City and its adjoining areas.Safety, public transport,pedestrian preferences,non-motorised transport, mass transit systems, etc. are the main issues of the plan. Besides,constructing 3 Metro Rail lines across the City is one of the adopted plans.In June 2013,Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited ( DMTC) was established by the Government to Implement the Metro Rail Lines across the city.

 System length    20.1 km (12.5 mi) (under construction) 128.741 km (79.996 mi)(planneDhaka).
