Bangabandhu Satellite-1

The country's first geostationary communication satellite,Bangabandhu-1 was launched at 2:14 am on May 11,2018.with this launch of Bangabandhu-1 has become the 57th country in the world and 4th in the South Asia- after India,Pakistan and Srilanka.

Bangabandhu-1 was designed and manufactured by the French satellite manufacturing company Thales Alenia Space  while it was launched by the American satellite launching company SpaceX through Falcon-9 rocket,from Cape Canaveral, Florida,USA.

The satellite, a project of tk 2,765.66 crore,weighs 3.7 tonnes.It will get its permanent home at orbital slot 119.1 degree east which Bangladesh rented from Russia for tk 221 crore for 15 years.Its service area is covered South Asian countries and Indonesia, the Philippines,Myanmar and some parts of former Soviet Republics.

Bangabandhu-1 can be controlled from three stations in the USA, Italy and South Korea for about a month. Later on it can be controlled and maintained by Bangladesh from two ground stations in Gazipur and Rangamati.Two huge antennas weighing ten tonnes have been set up at Gazipur ground station to receive signals from the satellite.State  owned Bangladesh Communication Satellite Company Ltd operate the business of the Bangabandhu-1.

The satellite offers Direct to home (D2H) services,making people's access to worldwide TV faster and easier.The satellite would immensely contribute to the digital advancement of the country.The country's remote parts -hair,hilly parts, coastal areas and deep sea-zones get internet service from the satellite.It is also helpful in distance learning and telemedicine services.It  provides the nation with dedicated emergency telecommunication services during natural disasters when  all other services go offline.

Bangabandhu-1 is a crucial tool for surveillance and ensuring national security.It is also a huge stride towards digitization.

Bangabandhu-1 can save the foreign currency by renting out broadcasting capacity to other nations.Bangladesh communication Satellite Company Ltd has already started the process of renting out the capacity to Indonesia and the Philippines.

Undoubtedly,it is the most sophisticated project in the country's history of Bangladesh.
